We can all do our part to protect the Earth, but kids might not understand they have a part until we talk to them. Use the reflection questions below to help children understand the important role the Earth plays in their lives every single day.
What resources do you use from the Earth each day?
Give your child a chance to think about this question and arrive at their own answer. Once they’ve shared their thoughts, guide them in a discussion about all of the resources the Earth provides for them.
Begin by talking about food and the soil that nourishes our food. Explore sources of energy such as oil for heat and cooking. Talk about how oxygen from trees helps us breathe and how many materials we use from furniture and clothes to toys and jewelry are made from natural resources.
Where are your favorite places to travel?
Again, give children a chance to think of their own answers before diving into a discussion. See what kind of answer they arrive at. If they say a place such as a beach, a lake, a hiking spot, or another natural place they enjoy, prompt them to think about what would happen to this spot if people didn’t take of the Earth and protect natural areas.
If your child instead shares that their favorite place to visit is an indoor spot, open up a discussion about how the Earth’s resources have been used to make this place possible. For example, the Earth provides the ground that buildings stand on and the materials used to build them.
Who do you think the Earth belongs to?
This should be an interesting question to hear kids share their thoughts on. They may notice that you have to pay to get on beaches and enter some parks. They may think the Earth belongs to the government or wealthy people. Take this opportunity to remind kids that the Earth is theirs, and they should take care of it as such.
Explain that the Earth belongs to each and every one of us, and how that makes us all partly responsible for its wellbeing. Discuss how children can honor and care for the Earth such as recycling, preventing pollution, not being wasteful, and advocating for eco-friendly practices when possible.
Interviewing kids about their personal experiences with Earth can help gently guide them to realize what an important role the Earth plays in their life and the benefits a healthy Earth can provide for us all.
