Fall in love with this simple Valentine’s Day activity for kids that not only fosters artistic skills but also introduces concepts of symmetry and design, making it both fun and educational for children!
You’ll Need:
- Paper
- Scissors
- Marker
- Paint
- Other decorations (optional)
Steps:
- Draw and Cut Out Hearts: Have the children draw a large heart shape on a piece of paper. If they need help, draw an outline for them to trace. Once drawn, have children carefully cut out the heart with scissors.
- Divide the Heart in Half: With the heart cutout laid flat, have children fold the heart down the middle line, dividing it into equal halves. Then open it back up. Take a moment to note that the two sides of the heart are now symmetrical. Explain that symmetry means having two sides that match if folded over an axis or line.
- Paint One Side: Invite children to paint on one side of the folded line. Make sure they keep their designs on only one half of the heart. They can use their imagination to create any design they like, but encourage them to make different shapes like triangles, squares, and diamonds to incorporate additional practice with shapes.
- Fold and Press: Once children have finished painting, guide them to carefully fold the heart in half along the line again and press down firmly once folded.
- Reveal Your Symmetry: Have the children gently unfold the heart to reveal the symmetrical artwork they’ve created. They’ll be delighted to see how their design has mirrored across the fold, resulting in a beautiful and balanced composition. Take another moment here to talk about symmetry and emphasize examples in their artwork.
- Optional Finishing Touches: If desired, children can add any finishing touches to their artwork, such as glitter, stickers, or additional details. Challenge them to add these elements symmetrically too!
- Display and Share: Encourage the children to display their symmetrical heart art to spread joy and love to others through their creative expression!
As kids admire their artwork, remind them that lots of beautiful art is made possible by exciting math concepts like shapes and symmetry!
