Now you and your child can mix your own paint colors using flower petals. Not all flowers easily produce color for painting, so let this be an exploratory activity about experimenting and fun!
You’ll Need:
- Flowers
- Cups of water
- Watercolor paper
- Paintbrushes (optional)
Step 1: Pick Your Flowers
Gather flowers such as dandelions, daisies, poppies, and geraniums. These petals will make beautiful bold colors and their leaves can be used to make green.
Step 2: Dip the Petals
Separate the petals from the flowers to use for painting. Dip the tip of whichever petal you’d like to paint with into a cup of water and then use it to brush color onto your paper like you would with a paintbrush.
Step 3: Paint Until Your Heart’s Content
Dip different colored petals into clean cups of water and continue adding to your painting. Alternatively, you can dip different colored petals into the same cup to mix your own paint colors which you can brush onto your paper using a paintbrush.
Step 4: Dry Your Masterpiece
Set your painting aside and give it time to dry. The colors may change as they dry to create a masterpiece different than the one you saw as you painted. Remember, art need not be perfect, so enjoy your creation however it turns out!
Note: Make sure kids wash their hands after handling flowers or any materials from the outdoors for learning purposes.
