Get started with these fun ideas below![/ultimate_ctation][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Read Across America Day has been celebrated by the National Education Association since 1998 with fun activities to get students and kids excited about reading every year. This year’s unique theme and educational programs are focused on celebrating a nation of diverse readers. Try these fun activities to teach the children in your life that no matter who you are, what you look like, or what your interests are, reading is something everyone can enjoy!

First, it’s a great idea to teach children to explore subjects and ideas that relate to their unique interests. Whether your kids enjoy books about sports, science, family, animals, or far-away lands, help them find their passion for reading with one of these fun ideas:

A Trip To The Local Library

  • Go to your local library and explore books on a topic your kid is interested in. Inform them that they can find different kinds of books on the topic of their choice from children’s literature to nonfiction resources for older kids and teens. This is a fun and hands-on way to help children create a personal relationship with reading.

Use Read-Aloud Books

  • You can also support students’ personal relationship with reading by searching for books read aloud on tape or YouTube related to the topic your child wants to explore. Read-aloud books can be a great resource for homeschooling programs and make educational lessons more interesting. Since March 2nd is also Dr. Seuss’ birthday, children may want to hear these fun stories read aloud. Help your child find a video of their favorite silly Seuss book or check out this video featuring a child reading through 4 classic Dr. Seuss stories.

Write A Story

  • Depending on children’s ages, you can have them even write their own stories. Together, you can write a book about the topic of your child’s choice. You can do research on different concepts by looking through other books with kids or searching the internet. This is another fun idea for homeschooling lessons and parents who homeschool. Once the story is written, have your child read it aloud to you or call up a family member and read it over the phone to build their skills. For a younger kid or toddlers, consider putting on a puppet show. Your puppet show can feature characters you create together through imaginative play and storytelling. This is a hands-on way to introduce your child to the arts.
