How to host an absolutely popping Super Bowl viewing party

In just about every area, this year has been, well, different. (I won’t say the word unprecedented. I won’t say it!)

Thankfully, we’ve passed the end-of-year and holiday season. Now we’ve got to get past this long winter. But first, Super Bowl.

The night of the Super Bowl game has always been one of family, friends and warm memories. There’s nothing like getting together with a bit of food, beer and friends, while watching your favorite team (hopefully!) win. 

So, how can you recreate those viewing parties without compromising safety or enjoyment?

Hosting a socially-distanced outdoor party

Here’s how you can create a safe Super Bowl viewing party:

• Send invites

There’s nothing like receiving an invite- be it paper or digital- to a party. The excitement builds up just by seeing it! If your party is following a theme, try to have your invite match in as well. Include the date, time, address and dress code (if you have a theme). 

• Set up multiple tables

You want to be sure that your friends and family feel comfortable and have enough space between themselves. Set up more tables than usual, so that your crowd can be spread apart. Don’t overcram the tables with too many chairs either.

• Avoid serving dipping foods

You may want to keep back from serving finger foods that require dipping. This will encourage safe eating habits and won’t encourage using finger-using. This will also help your guests avoid clustering around one bowl.

• Serve individual portions

One safe way of serving dipping foods (which, let’s admit, are always part of the program) is by serving them in individual portions. Prepare sauces and condiments in mini plastic containers or ramequins, so everyone can enjoy their party favorites while staying safe.

• Set up a schedule

Hang a chalkboard by the entrance of the patio with the planned schedule. Your schedule can include eating times, game times, break times etc.

• Prepare a stash of blankets

If you live in a cool or cold area, the worst thing is to host a party while your guests freeze. Prepare a pile of blankets so your guests can wrap themselves when they get cold. You can also prepare some outdoor heaters to keep your patio nice and toasty. 

• Rent or buy a movie projector/screen

 In order to ensure that everyone can watch and fully enjoy the experience, rent a projector and big video screen. This will allow everyone to see everything from their place. 

• Show some team spirit

Decorate your patio with paraphernalia from your favorite team (regardless if they’re competing in the game). Hang flags, display banners, buy some t-shirts or other team memorabilia.

• Take loads of pictures

There’s no better way to complete the night than by taking pictures that prove that it took place! Order some photo booth props online and have fun taking pictures of or with your guests.  

• Prepare easy desserts and treats

Everyone loves having sweets to munch on while they watch a game. Prepare some easy desserts that your guests will love, and that won’t be hard to eat (i.e. won’t require cutlery etc). Prepare cookie dough in advance- keep it refrigerated until you bake. As soon as you feel the crowd needs it, pop them into the oven. If it’s chilly out, you can make hot cocoa bombs with matching hot cocoa cookies to warm the crowd up. Cake pops are easy and a sure favorite too.

• Announce the safety protocols

Be clear with your guests what the safety protocols will be. You can include it on the invite, or hang a poster by the entrance of your patio. Safety protocols to include: wear masks when not eating or drinking, sta 6 feet apart, avoid crowding, come in through the side entrance etc

Hosting a virtual party

What if you want to have a viewing party without compromising on anyone’s safety? Have a virtual party!

• Send invites

Send your guests an invite to the viewing party. Be sure they all have access to the platform you chose to use (Zoom, FaceTime etc). Be sure to send the link in advance, and right before the party as well. 

• Coordinate the food

There’s nothing like bonding over the same foods, even if it isn’t all in one house. Make a list of appropriate viewing party foods that everyone should prepare in their homes. Foods can include: mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce, nachos ‘n cheese etc.

• Show some team spirit

Have some fun with the decor around the room your device is in. Change your background to one of your favorite team, wear a team t-shirt, hang some posters etc.
