Be the first to get your shadow on the ground in this silly game for Groundhog’s Day.[/ultimate_ctation][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Ready to play? Here are the steps:

1. First, pick someone to be the sun. Where this person stands will determine where the light is coming from in the game, and therefore the direction that the “shadow” players should be in. Remember that a shadow points in the same direction as the sun or light source creating it. Need help exploring the science of shadows with kids? Check out our shadow science activities here.

2. Next, split the rest of the players into partners. One partner will be a “shadow” and one will be a groundhog.

3. Then, the sun shines on. The “sun” player will stand in one spot and raise up their arms. This means the light is shining in that direction. The groundhog players will stop and pose. The “shadow” players must lay down behind their partners and try to make the shape of their shadow in that pose.

4. Finally, a winner is chosen. The sun player takes a look at the shadows and determines who made the best shadow match for their partner the fastest. This person gets to be the sun next! Switch shadow and poser players for the next round.
