Did you know International Chocolate Day, September 13th, is also Milton S. Hershey’s birthday? That’s no coincidence—it’s because of Hershey’s lasting legacy in the world of chocolate.

The sweet history of chocolate is a great way to inspire little ones who are forming their own dreams for the future. Share this Hershey history to inspire children to stick with their passions and know they can make an incredible impact!

Here are some of the most important lessons little dreamers can learn from Hershey:

Think Outside of the (Chocolate) Box

Before Hershey stepped in, chocolate was inaccessible to many. By mass producing his milk chocolate, Hershey was able to cut costs and share chocolate with more people. Soon he thought even more outside the box and started mass-producing his famous Hershey Kisses! These made chocolate even easier to share. If you’re looking for exciting chocolate activities for kids, try making your own kisses by piping melted chocolate onto a pan in kiss shapes and freezing them!

Supporting Your Team Can Bring You Success

You can’t do anything in this world alone. Hershey knew this so he always made sure to support his community and the people who worked for him as best he could. He made it his mission to ensure the town where his employees lived and worked in was a thriving one. That’s why the Milton Hershey School exists and is funded by Hershey’s profits to give local students an excellent education, many of whom probably end up working for the Hershey Company in the future!

Work with the Times

Hershey knew to mix things up when times changed. During the Great Depression, the company created the Ration D bar for soldiers serving in WWII while also building Hershey Park, the Hershey Hotel, and other landmarks that created jobs for Americans who desperately needed them.

Care About Quality

The thing every chocolate maker needs is cocoa! Thanks to Hershey, his company knows how important quality cocoa is to their business. That’s why in 2000, they became a founding member of the World Cocoa Foundation. This supports cocoa farmers and cocoa agriculture in West Africa. How else would Hershey continue to make the best kids chocolate choices?

Care About People

To this day, the Hershey company continues to be community-oriented. They’ve been recognized as one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the nation for years! They’ve also been voted one of the best places to work, the #1 female-friendly company in the world, and recognized for their commitment to diversity in the workplace. While Hershey’s brand is based on chocolate, caring about people is what truly makes their reputation sweet.

Hershey has taught us all that we can create something sweet and make the world a better place while we’re at it!
