Did you know National Health Education Week is the week before Halloween? It might seem like a practical joke to have to try to teach kids about healthy living right before the biggest candy-driven holiday of the year, but these tips can help you gear up for healthy Halloween fun all night long!

1. Eat Before You Trick-or-Treat

Before you costume up for candy, don’t forget dinner. That’s right, step 1 of a healthy Halloween for kids is to make sure they eat a healthy Halloween dinner before going out. This way kids have something nutritious and filling before being tempted to fill up on all that candy!

2. Put Away the Pillow Cases

As kids are getting ready to run around the neighborhood, prep them with the right trick-or-treat bag. Although a classic candy collection bag is a pillow case, this lets kids collect way more candy than they could ever (or should ever) eat in one season! So use smaller bags. Since kids can only eat as much as their bags can carry, using smaller trick-or-treat bags for kids ensures that they limit their sugar intake.

3. Get Candy With Cardio

When you take kids out to get their candy, make sure they are moving. Instead of driving to different neighborhoods, try to go to a spot with a bunch of connected neighborhoods to encourage kids to walk as much as they can. And you can keep kids moving after trick-or-treating too with this candy-themed workout.

4. Turn Healthy Food into Spooky Snacks

Once you’re back home, set out healthy spooky snacks alongside your kids’ candy. Break out healthy food like fruit and veggies and craft versions of your favorite Halloween symbols or characters. Need inspo? Check out our Skeleton Veggie Platter or our Jack-O’-Lantern Orange Cup!
