Memorial Day weekend is often when we kick off the summer with barbecues and camping trips. But if you’re looking for kid-friendly ways to include children in recognizing the brave men and women we honor today, here are a few ideas:

1. Create Thoughtful Care Packages

Give children a tangible way to honor our heroes by boxing up treats and necessities for those who have served. You can assemble care packages with exactly what veterans or active-duty military members need by working with organizations such as Operation: Comfort and Care and Soldiers’ Angels. If you have a personal contact in the military, you can send them a personalized care package following these guidelines.

2. Attend a Memorial Day Parade

As children are immersed in the energy and atmosphere of a Memorial Day parade, they will be able to witness groups of soldiers and veterans proudly marching together in solemnity. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to pay respects and gain appreciation for the sacrifices made by servicemen and women.

3. Show Support Through Donations

If you don’t have time to create a care package, you can go online with your kids and donate to an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. Consider contributing to reputable causes like Building Homes for Heroes, which strives to provide mortgage-free homes for wounded veterans. Operation Homefront allows you to donate to individual veterans and military families in need right now. Your donation can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have served.

4. Visit a Historic Site

Transform Memorial Day into a journey through history and an educational adventure. Choose a historic site or museum that engages children in lessons about the sacrifices of American soldiers throughout history. Children will be able to connect with the past and honor the legacy of all who have served.

5. Embrace Freedom in Nature

Spend time at a park or nearby hiking trail to enjoy the land of the free this Memorial Day.  As you spend quality time outdoors together, you can reflect on the freedoms we have thanks to the soldiers who fight to keep places like this safe for us.

We hope this list of family-friendly Memorial Day activities gives you the chance to enlist your “troop” in meaningful moments that honor the significance of this holiday and fill your children with understanding and gratitude all weekend long!
